Cross-platform application development has historically involved unpleasant compromises: sluggish web-wrapper runtimes that consume gigabytes of RAM on desktop, or fragmented codebases requiring distinct Swift, Kotlin, and C++ teams.
With the release of Tauri v2, cross-platform engineering reached a major inflection point: official support for mobile platforms (Android and iOS) alongside desktop (Windows, macOS, and Linux) powered by a unified Rust backend.
In developing TeraLace, Tauri v2 served as the architectural foundation. Here is an overview of how we structured the application to deliver native desktop and mobile experiences from a single repository.
1. Dual-Mode UI: Adaptive Desktop & Touch-Optimized Mobile
Desktop download managers prioritize dense data grids, system tray access, global shortcuts, and file path pickers. Mobile applications demand touch-friendly targets, collapsible drawers, gesture navigation, and Android Scoped Storage integration.
Using Vite, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS, TeraLace implements responsive layouts that adapt dynamically to the host target:
- Desktop (Windows / macOS):
- Native system tray integration with minimize-to-tray on close.
- Live per-task speed gauges, bandwidth limit sliders, and native file manager (
explorer/Finder) reveal buttons.
- Mobile (Android):
- Bottom navigation bar with touch-optimized gesture controls.
- Safe area inset handling for notches and dynamic Android gesture bars.
- Battery-conscious foreground service notifications showing live progress.
2. In-App Media Streaming Before Download
A major friction point when dealing with large archives is verifying video content before spending hours downloading tens of gigabytes.
TeraLace bridges the Rust networking engine and the frontend webview via an embedded local HTTP streaming server:
- When streaming is initiated, the Rust engine requests initial MP4
moovatom chunks via HTTPRangeheaders. - The partial stream is exposed to the frontend webview via a local loopback port.
- The integrated video player streams video and audio with instant seek capabilities, allowing users to preview media immediately.
3. Conclusion & Takeaways
Tauri v2 provides a clean balance of performance, low resource overhead, and cross-platform flexibility. TeraLace demonstrates that a single developer can maintain high-performance native desktop and Android apps without maintaining separate platform silos.
